Cisco - empower your hybrid teams, in any workspace.

Unlock new ways to collaborate and give everyone an equal seat at the table with Cisco room devices.

Project background

Cisco in Norway location is the Research and Development team for Cisco hardware meeting experience devices, these devices also have interactive interfaces on them, some are touched and some are not. Since works are under NDA, I can share some feedbacks I got from external and internal stakeholders and some behind the scenes.

My role

After my first year of master’s studies, I took 2 gap years to gain more experience before I go back to school for the final year of my master’s degree. I was hired as a UX/UI designer at Cisco with 12 engineers frontend and backend, I also work with the Product manager and engineering lead for every feature that needs to be launched. I am mainly responsible for the core meeting experience area, which is also what our product is about. I have designed and launched 20+ key features.

Project details

Project Team:

Collaborators: Google, Apple, Microsoft, the US federal government, and Bank of America to name a few

Project duration: 1 year and 11 months

Context

Cisco meeting devices want to be the devices that can be the go-to place for all the meeting platforms, like Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, and Zoom. However, current meeting experiences on Cisco devices are challenging for joining a meeting online, hard to find meeting information to join, and inconsistent look and feel on different meeting platforms on devices. My task is to solve these problems and redesign these experiences. I am designing for four conference devices Cisco has, what makes it interesting is that when the room environment changes, different scenarios of design need to be considered.

How might we design seamless online meeting experiences where there is almost no friction in joining a meeting online no matter what meeting platforms you are on?

Behind the scenes

Field trips, going to a co-working space who have our products and testing them out, and speaking with people who use our products to get first-hand knowledge of what their struggles are.

Was also involved in designing sounds for our systems, super fun process, my engineers are having fun at my desk

Talking with engineers and see how might we make the design vision come true based on testing feedback.

Reflection

I learned how to work with engineers and product managers to align our goals while balancing the needs of our external stakeholders and, in other words, trying to make everyone happy without compromising the design I want to implement. Also, l learned how the sausage is made behind the scenes. Most importantly, using design principles and practices to improve Cisco products, services, and the organization.
